Next Gen 911 - GIS Becomes the System Backbone
Changes taking place in 911 over the next few years will require significant modification and expansion of the GIS data structures currently maintained by MN Counties. Once 911 migrates from its original land telephone based system to the IP based system, GIS will become the backbone for routing calls. This will move GIS to the front end of the process, rather than serving as a tool utilized after the call has already been routed to the PSAP. Learn more about the upcoming changes, so that your GIS plans include supporting Next Generation 911.
New 911 GIS data standards are currently under development.

27 Counties Responded- Parcel Mapping Discrepancies
Summary of responses
(Request for information sent to MN counties- 27 counties responded)
Question sent:
To: MN County GIS Managers /Directors
Seeking information from the MN County GIS Contacts pertaining to the process your county follows when GIS or other staff identifies discrepancies in acres or other issues on the deeds when drawing the parcel boundary. Anomalies that may prompt follow up: significant acreage difference, overlaps, gaps, description does not match location of buildings etc. We have held discussions here about current process /policy, which is partly written and partly not. It is our goal to develop a more complete written policy and standardized notification letter for the landowner.
Our Land Team is interested in learning more about how other counties handle this, is there a standard? Two main issues of concern are minimizing county liability and ...

Re: National, Statewide, Local, and Vendor specific GIS Data Standards
Data standardization seems to be one of the more popular discussion items at work lately. The need to adjust GIS data sets maintained locally to work more efficiently for the projects we are charged with has many GIS managers studying what makes most sense for our organizations and, as importantly, what can be accomplished with the time and resources we have available. The use of GIS is expanding and maturing across our nation requiring data standardization at all levels of government.
MnGeo ( the Minnesota Geospatial Information Office) was recently created through state legislation to coordinate GIS in Minnesota. The Digital Cadastral Data Committee, previously known as Land Records Modernization provides recommendations to MnGeo regarding statewide standards. DCDC’s Attribute Subcommittee is currently working on the development of a statewide standardized set of data fields for use with parcel mapping. Metro GIS- a regional group of seven counties - has already developed, for their member counties, a standardized set of approximately 65 attributes. MnGeo’s DCDC committee is studying that list as a starting point for a possible Minnesota standard.
